Im newish to Thermo Fisher Scientific but trying to understand the promotion cycle. It seems vertical career moves within Thermo are much more difficult than diagonal. When you are looking to move up a career band how often has that movement actually happened vertically in the team or group you work in?

A lot, depending on your industry.
The raw knowledge gained is probably of marginal use - and everyone can learn it themselves if they wanted to.
The value is in setting a first impression. By saying ‘Qualified accountant’ or ‘CFA’ to certain people, you will immediately have set a bar for your intelligence and work ethic (whether rightly or wrongly).
I work mainly in FS - so everyone knows what these terms mean, and just makes the intro conversation on your experience, and establishing your credibility, easier.
However this is not a catch all - works maybe 1 in 10 times, so YMMV
Literally nothing.
