At a guess 50%. I've been let go 4 times! I somehow have found a better opportunity each time so fear not and enjoy some time off.
I was laid off in my sixth year of working in advertising (currently in year eleven). It was a total shock to my system at the time but yes - like many topics considered “taboo” it is way more common than expected, especially in advertising. Best of luck to you - you’re not alone, you’re still worthy and valuable, and you will find a new job. This industry may be drastically evolving but it’s not dying any time soon.
Twice in advertising in 12 years (and once in financial industry before that). Extremely common as it's account loss / scope reduction driven.
Also, hang in there. You’re awesome, but it’s all about that bottom line. Not you. Keep your head up!
@C1 day drinking during happy hour is the best!
I was laid off early on and then saw the writing on the wall again years ago so got ahead of it. Looking back should have also taken the severance but was too prideful. Each time has gotten me to a better place. Best to you
11 years in the biz. Laid off once 9 years in at Sr AD level
I've been here for a couple years. Pretty much a round of layoffs every year.
2 times in 10 years. Both lead to even greater opportunities! Super common. Keep your head up and try not to take it personally. (That was difficult for me)
Been laid off twice in 8 years. The first time thinly veiled as a reduction in staff, it the reality was that they had recently hired a new head of production and we did not see eye-to-eye on her new process. She ended up being let go herself a few months later. Second time my agency shut down the NY office due to lack of revenue. Each time I was in a new role before my severance ended with a 20% bump in salary
Laid of once during the recession in 17 years. But who know.. the industry is changing so much, ad agencies are struggling, my team is restructuring so we'll see.
@UXD1 usually on the spot.
Over nearly 30 years, I ve left voluntarily to other industries 3 times and have been laid off in this one twice. It sucks unless you decide it's part of being in this business and focus on building your reputation and work ethic. If you have that, you will never be unemployed long. That said, this is a spectacularly badly run industry and management doing lay offs is a lazy out most of the time. The only good solution is leave the business (grass may not be greener), go client side or start your own shop where you are the one deciding who goes and stays.
Laid off once in 20 years
Laid off 3x in 8 years and have learned from each and every one of them.
Glad to see I’m in good company. Did you tell your network and potential future employers you were laid off or did you try and spin a different story?
What’s the saying, you’re not really even in this business til you’ve been laid off at least 3 times? Myself, twice in this career (11 years), once in another media related career.
I've been lucky and have not been laid off. But considering it took me 3 years to find my current job (while employed at my last one), I'm terrified that if I ever do get laid off, I'll never get another gig and end up homeless. It's honestly my single biggest fear.
✋🏻
That's gross. I'd rather be nobody and have a paycheck if that's the case.
Twice in my 12 years - it's common unfortunately.
I’m in the same boat as @VPD1. I haven’t been laid off in 12 years of working. But I suspect it’s because I’ve been underpaid my whole career and was super junior during the recession. Also, I’ve only worked at 2 agencies. Cheap & loyal FTW.
