At a guess 50%. I've been let go 4 times! I somehow have found a better opportunity each time so fear not and enjoy some time off.
I was laid off in my sixth year of working in advertising (currently in year eleven). It was a total shock to my system at the time but yes - like many topics considered “taboo” it is way more common than expected, especially in advertising. Best of luck to you - you’re not alone, you’re still worthy and valuable, and you will find a new job. This industry may be drastically evolving but it’s not dying any time soon.
Thanks, all. It was only a handful of people let go so feeling particularly singled out but glad I’m in good company. Now onto my second question....for how many days/weeks is it acceptable to drink every single night while unemployed??
Been laid off twice in 14 years. The first time really fucked my ego and mental state. The second time, I smiled as I left the office
OP I’m unemployed and drink every night. Daytime is for hustling, nighttime is for my liver.
OP- much more rewarding to drink during the day and take advantage of those happy hour specials
I haven’t been laid off in 15 years. However I think I’m grossly underpaid so probably not a huge investment for the agency
Old saying, “you haven’t really worked in advertising till you’ve been laid off”. Shitty industry.
If you've been in this business a decade and haven't been laid off once, you're either lucky or not taking the same risks others do. It always sucks when a layoff surprises you but rest assured it's not uncommon. Unfortunately it's becoming more common in other industries too.
Laid off 4 times in 7 years. Last time I got insomnia cause I was so sure I sucked at this and I’d never hold a job. After then I found a good job with a great team and now I’m leaving on my own terms for once, but it was rough going for a long time.
Happened twice in ten years. Both times it was scary (especially the time when I had a new baby at home), and both times I ended up at better agencies getting paid more.
Just got laid off 2 weeks ago yesterday. Working 12 years. First time getting laid off. Yay severance! I always had a feeling it would happen once I got into a leadership position and voila after only 3 months there, it did ☹️
I'd also like to add I am not going back to the agency world. I would rather take a pay cut and go client side as a media manager. Agency world sucks.
I got laid off from my first advertising job less than 6 months in due to the loss of a client. Really sucked at the time because I loved everyone I worked with, but I chuckle about it now.
3 Times in 18 years, but it was kind of front loaded. Barely avoided a fourth
6 times in 20 yrs. it bothers you less each time.
Twice in 15 years. Let's meet for happy hour! Spring is springing, time for drinking! 🍻
I’ve witnessed at least 5 layoffs (large and small) in 17 years. Maybe more.
You’re nobody in this business until you’ve been laid off 3 times.
Someone told me that in 1992. Some things never change
Thanks, all, for the perspective and advice. I actually started a new job last week and your experiences helped give me the confidence to not feel like a totally unwanted loser heading into those interviews, so thank you!
