Stay humble They probably will get a lot of shit (comedy/technology/pop culture) that you don’t.
100 bad ideas that they think are all brilliant. One brilliant idea that they don’t think is all that hot, but is once you help them with it.
Inexperience.
Not in a bad way. But you will get a lot of inexperience. I was there. You were there. We all were. What you should expect to do with juniors is to help them be able to hone thoughts, ideas, and help them build the experience they’ll need to become mid/sr/and so on.
CW2, It’s been my experience that juniors put a ton of work in but not a lot of it is good. That’s where we come in. To help make it better. I don’t see anything wrong with that statement. No need for sarcastic attacks.
You should expect long hours, lots of thinking. Most of it will require a TON of help from you.
I just about posted "delicious cheesecake and a decent diner based menu. Try the ice cream sundae." Then I remembered what platform I was on.
I don’t believe in unnecessary churn. But I do believe in creative being an early on numbers game. The more time spent coming up with ideas (particularly if you’re new and not very good at it yet) will more likely yield good ideas. The teams that stop after they think they’ve nailed it after the first few ideas, are usually the ones with the worst ideas.
Depends. I can only tell you my experience. I was very eager when I started out. Had a lot of bad ideas, but learned quickly. I was happy to do absolutely anything and open to all criticism and guidance. After about a year and a half of bottom of the barrel, junior work, I grew very cynical and complacent. 1/2
Some of it is my own fault, some of it is just the nature of junior work. But I'd say, overall, we wanna do good, creative work. We just need a few carrots and not always be relegated to garbage work. So, expect enthusiasm and inexperience, but when they start to gather experience, don't take the enthusiasm for granted. 2/2
Attitude.
Wow, @CD 1. You sound wonderful and wise.
@CD 1: I guess your phrasing made me feel like you were making the cliched blanket statement "junior = pay dues." I apologize. I agree it's your job in shaping rare conceptual nuggets into actual, sellable ideas, hopefully without the unnecessary churn that drives people out of the business.
You shouldn't expect too much. They have to work hard d as anyone else but they shouldn't have much expectations and responsibilities. I see this happening a lot.
Expect lots of motivation, energy and lots of ideas that don't really answer the brief. That is were mid and senior level creative should come into play and help them navigate thru those ideas
