You show up with an offer letter from a different agency. “I love working here and I know you’ve gone above and beyond for me. I’d love to stay here. Do you want to counter??"
Noooo. Don't make threats. Nobody likes receiving a threat. Create desire not fear. Fear makes people feel bad and eventually they resent that and take it out on your leverage is gone. Get another offer
Yes ☝🏼
More appropriately. Show up with an offer letter and let them say good luck and wish you the best. If you feel under valued why bother staying.
One is an empty threat , causing fear without substance. The other is a real world situation managers deal with all the time and is part of the job
@SVP1 agree to disagree. In my case, I didn't position it as a threat as much as a way to show they’re not giving me much incentive to stay. Used that tactic and got a solid career path from it. However, I had a lot of personal capital with my boss so he knew I didn’t want to leave but I also didn’t want to stall my career or be taken for granted.
I’ve seen the competing offer letter option work several times but you have to be ready to leave if they won’t match. I have seen people get an offer from an agency they didn’t like thinking it was just a bargaining chip and being told good luck and we’ll miss you. Personally, if I go to the effort to network, interview and get another offer, I’m already out the door.
Never use the counter offer!
Because when it’s time to make cuts it’s easy to look to the person who threatened
Director 1. That’s exactly how I feel! I like the place I work at. I actually have a work/life balance and produce a lot of great work. I️f I’m going to make an effort and really look and get an offer, I’ll just take it.
Thanks everyone for all the great response. I see value in all of them.
You can only pull the “I have an offer” stunt ONCE during your time at an agency. You’ll have to decide if this is the one time you want to do it.
Dear CCO, between inflation and the increasing cost of my benefits I am taking home less money now than I did after my last raise (or when you hired me). I like it here but not enough to pay to work here. If there is no plan to increase my compensation or promote me, you’re forcing me to explore other opportunities.
@SVP I was tracking with you until you said to get another offer. Is an offer letter not a bigger threat than just saying “you’re forcing me to look”??
Research your salary range and pull proof from three places (Glassdoor is a start, look for a local salary survey too). Print it out and show them. Otherwise it’s just you asking for more money cause you want it and not any other reason. Show you want to be held to industry standards and if they refuse ask why you can’t be brought up to the standard rate, and what you need to do to get there (might be bullshit, but then they have to justify their no).
*take it out on you when your leverage is gone
