What should my compensation be? I’m a tax manager with 9 YOE , and a high performer. I’ve brought in clients, participated in improving the organization and systems. Brought in speculative technology to increase firm productivity, work well with all partners and team mates.

Facts:
Manager
9 Years of experience
Live in HCOL
Assisted in Hiring

Current salary is in the $140K range , feels low for my contributions.

Seems about right for m but sounds like you're ready for sm

That’s fine, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. They just need to pay me what’s fair, and if not someone will. Appreciate the insight 🫡

I’m also in LA my base is 165 k with a healthy bonus, I’m just shy of 8 YOE

My question is why you aren’t SM if you are high performer and you have 9 YOE

like

Then why don’t you stay

like

You’re being underpaid.

Crowe 1 - like everyone is saying shop around, interview at different places (even if it’s just for practice), get a few offers, compare them. If you enjoy your team, your clients/work, then I wouldn’t jeopardize it by moving to a different firm. I would politely inform your boss about how you feel and the market value for your experience. Don’t give them any of the offer lettters tho.

in 2022 when i was a 2nd year Manager with 7 years I was at 160k in east coast, not NY.

I’m a tax manager with 8 YOE at 170k. Also in HCOL not NYC or SF and I’m not considered a high performer lol. Definitely look around.

I agree that it sounds like you’re ready for SM. You might be capped out at your comp level for a manager.

I saw you’re in Los Angeles - if you’re interested in other opportunities, our firm in Los Angeles is going to be hiring for at least one manager. We’re currently in a position where we’re looking for people that are passionate about helping with process improvements since we’ve grown rapidly the last few years (all organic) and now we’re focused on getting the infrastructure caught up.

DM me if interested! If not, best of luck to you as you continue on in your career!

like

You should shop yourself around. Definitely talk with the people who set your salary about getting you more money. I’m making more but certainly less qualified than you (I’m very aware of the gaps in my background) and not in a HCOL location.

There’s a few ways to approach this. Frame it like this for example, what more do I need to be doing to be at my peer’s comp level? Why are my efforts not worth the same dollars as people who are doing the same or less? Maybe there’s something you are missing that you need to be aware of. Otherwise it’s the approach I took at a former job and it definitely got me better raises and bonuses than I would’ve gotten otherwise. I ended up leaving that job, but it took several years to find something truly better and I benefited from the improved raises and bonuses in that time.

You likely won’t get a 25% bump from your current employer immediately. Last month would’ve been a good time to start these conversations with your bosses, because that’s when they were likely doing budgets and planning out comp adjustments. But do it right away this week.

$140K is low for LA. I’m SoCal and was $165K as an M with 8 YOE about a year ago.

Definitely low

Manager with 9 YOE and High Performer don’t go together lol

funny

Stop trashing people when you don’t know the full story. Says a lot about you. It’s pathetic.

like

It okay to have the conversation, even before shopping around. But go in with a well laid out list as to why you deserve more and know what you want (ask high end cause they will offer less)

Go online and search for your job description-I believe California has the salary disclosure requirement that NY has. Print out all of them showing you should be paid more.

Pull together your current job details - not only the regular stuff but also list separately the stuff you do that contributes over and above (such as training) that the others don’t do.

Then list the clients you have brought in - the extra revenue to the firm

Then list the clients that have openly said they stayed because of you - the current revenue to the firm.

Bring all of that to the meeting. But open the meeting with the positives that you like about the firm, but you are fully aware that you are not only underpaid compared to the market but also internally. The lay out each of the items above. Do not say what you want to be paid until after you have laid out the value you bring otherwise they can justify a lesser amount in their mind.

like

No proble. I was exactly where you are a few months ago. And while they didn’t come up to what I was asking for, they did come up 2/3rds. But the partners even admitted that they knew I was being underpaid.

When searching for jobs, focus on the job description not title.

Seems about right for HCOL
