What strategies and tools do you use when dealing with texts that contain more mature or sensitive topics?

I just take the time to really have open discussions. I warn kids ahead of time about the sensitive subject. If they start making rude comments I shut them down, but really I have only had problems twice (both times students were just very uncomfortable with a the topic). Both times I talked to the student about it separately outside of class. The first one that worked well, the second one still wasn't having it- it was virtual and she really couldn't accept the topic. It wasn't even really that sensitive- I told her to focus on the literary elements and the technical aspects of the writing. That being said, I pretty much always teach about sensitive topics. I think by and large the students appreciate that I am willing to talk about important topics.

I do this as well and always remind my students of the importance of being mature and that disagreeing with someone doesn't have to lead to disrespecting that person.

I always talk to my students about it before we start. I have found that if they know what’s coming, they handle it a whole lot better than if they are surprised by the topic.
