I have always used MS Word. As an HR professional, when candidates use other tools, the resume won't allow me to open their document.

Sometimes I can, others I can't. I have found that individuals who use Mac computers, won't allow me to download. I think it depends on what they use.

I ended up doing it in LaTeX and exporting it as a pdf.
It’s one of the best ways to ensure that automatic scanning software can parse the resume.
The problem is not canva per se - its the applicant tracking systems that do a poor job parsing out info when you have one of those pretty Canva designs. if 100 resumes come in and the system rejects them because the metrics they want can't be found, guess what happens to your resume.
Soooo, build it in a nice looking standard format word .docx and save that as .pdf. I've seen word resumes come in with changes in the .docx and you can see where people changed stuff to match the job description as advertised - which is something all applicants should to get a higher ats score.
finally, if you are not using it, run your resume vs a job you ae applying for through jobscan.co (then get it to over 95%!).
Great point, thanks! Yesterday I created a brand new resume using MS Word with a very simple design (1 column resume, no fancy photos, etc.). I got a PDF export and uploaded it on Jobscan, yet I was getting the score of 47%, and it could not locate my education and contact info sections in my CV. However they are visible with headlines as well. Any tips for this? I also want to know how reliable Jobscan or any other ATS website is?

jobscan has an incentive to give you a lower score at the outset and I found a lot of variability in scores across multiple platforms using the same resume. That said, stick to a one column layout so the key info does not share the same line. All modern browsers should be able open a PDF with no problems. I use PDF some times to ensure less formatting issues. Also make sure you use Arial or a sans-serif font.
Will do, thanks for the insight!
