Through LI’s automated notification feature? It’s fine. As a self-congratulatory status update? Not the best time.
That logic could be applied to anything: Don’t post your pregnancy announcement because someone else is having a hard time conceiving, or don’t post your weight loss journey because someone else is struggling, etc.
People should be allowed to celebrate their successes. There is a difference in people having the right to be happy vs. maliciously bragging.
While I do feel for people who have been laid off, I wouldn’t postpone posting my promotion. Everyone will bounce back eventually.
Understand the compassion but you shouldn’t dim your light bc of others. When I posted about my job I started it off with a bit acknowledging others who aren’t so lucky.

The auto update yes.
The “so excited to have made it to ____ thanks [company] for making this such a great journey!” with the accompanying selfie and hashtags....not so much.
These suck regardless of if there’s a pandemic going on
I turned off update notifications (don’t want people seeing when I’ve made new connections, new LinkedIn learning certifications). You can change notifications to off and no one will see the update unless they go on your profile. I think it’s really nice that you’re being sensitive to it, though— honestly, if people at your company get laid off later they may reference your promotion so I’d probably turn it off out of both respect/ self-preservation.

If you change your title it doesn’t have to be broadcast out, I believe. In the past I’ve used an option to just make an update

Would not broadcast unless you are changing employers. People may spot and reach out.
