I worked in product management for over 40 years. If a customer insight forces you to change your roadmap then you are too late and too far removed from your market. You have a failing product strategy. In a properly functioning product team, you should know where the market is headed six months to one year ahead. If your company does not provide the time and resources to stay ahead of your market, or even better, drive the direction of your market the way Microsoft, Amazon, and other have done, then your company is making your job impossible. Product Managers don't manage roadmaps; they try to see the future.
