What’s the best way to negotiate for a higher base or a sign-on bonus? I got an offer from a mid-sized firm that I really like, but the base salary is about 15% lower than what I’m currently making. They mentioned a discretionary bonus structure that could close the gap, but there are no guarantees in the contract. I don't want to lose the offer by being too aggressive, but I also can't afford to take a pay cut in this economy.

I interviewed at a law firm and had my final round last Friday. The Tuesday afterward, I got a call from the recruiter saying the firm won’t have a decision for another week. I believe they’re interviewing other candidates. Does that make me second or third choice? And does the fact that I’m working with a recruiter hurt my chances of being selected due to the commission? Should I hold out for the offer or is 1+ week a sign that I won’t be selected?
