Sometimes a messy interview is a gift—it shows you exactly what you’d be walking into.
Truth ❤️
I had a coffee meeting once with a partner when I wasn’t looking to lateral. He really impressed me and I changed my tune and ended up coming to work with him. We’ve been working together for years now, and he was a big help when I made partner. He happily shares in managing our team and is very selfless (even though he has a huge book). I’ve now built m my own book and will still do whatever I can to help him because he would do the same for me. The importance of finding the right leaders to follow cannot be overstated. It can make a huge difference in your career.
100%. I just made a similar move, and I'm very excited about the potential even though there was a compromise. It's moving me under a different umbrella, and my professional growth potential is so much greater. Sometimes you've got to do the old pros and cons on paper and let that result guide you.
If the interviewer doesn’t seem prepared. If they are interested, at least your first interviewers will be prepared with thoughtful answers.
Could it also be a test for you to see how you respond to disagreements, even when you’re not really involved? It may be a negative sign, but these days, lawyers are being tested constantly!
I would like working with these guys. Honesty is the best policy -- they are not phony.
How is giving conflicting answers about billable targets a good thing?
When the hiring panel’s non verbal body language is standoffish and passive aggressive, it typically indicates that a power struggle is going on within the company. Aside from that weirdly inappropriate interview questions like do you have kids, do you live alone, what does the bottom of your car look like. Also hiring on the spot is a major red flag-I worked at the most toxic law firm after I hired on the spot and then was fired 2 weeks later for no good reason.
I have been asked in two seperate interviews. "What would you do if you believed that a particular course of action was the best one, but I as the Case carying Attorney told you to proceed differently?
This is a huge red flag! The attorney asking this question has had a number of subordinates disagree with their judgement, causing the subordinate to seek input from other attorneys at the firm. You don't want to work with someone who has poor judgement! It is not fun to be concerned that if you do as you are told you will loose your license, but if you seek the input of a different senior attorney you may well lose your job!
It’s probably not a good sign. 🏃♀️
Being asked my race. Not even coded as "where are you from," or "what language do you speak?"
That's crazy. I've had a managing attorney try to sneakily ask me about my home life, clearly trying to learn if I had kids. I didn't respond and we just sat there for a few seconds until he moved on to another question.
