did you not have a CD when you were ACD to learn from?
Tons to unpack here but the biggest thing is you are suppose to know how to educate and train copyrighters and art directors or at least give them yearly goals or pointers to push their crafts. The agency expects you to hire top performers or train them. The Accounts expect you to make sure the art actually hits the strategy. The client expects you to understand their products or services. etc . etc.
In reality most agencies are a "production house" most of the time. hence client feedback seems like 99% of your day.

Chances are, if you’re an ACD you’ve have to flex up to fill a role that a CD has vacated or was absent for momentarily.
Think about the moments in client meetings when the client asks something of creative and the room looks to you for the answer. That’s what being a CD feels like everyday.
That, plus the weight of finding the equilibrium of representing your agency well creatively, while respecting your teams workload. That tug of war is the internal org battle
Shifting from being an advocate of your own work to an advocate of others’.
The “shift” you’re looking for comes from being mentored by your CD… I haven’t moved up because my ACD and CD were lazy and insecure, so no actual mentoring and a lot of bully tactics to make people believe they’re smarter than what they actually are.
This is the state of advertising now, no more standup individuals who are true creatives at heart. No one respects the craft anymore, folks just want titles.
