Heyhey.
Looking to hire a product UX/designer to freelance and help design + run ideation workshops for our Fortune 100 client looking to drive innovation and create/incubate b2c apps.
Would be great if you also knew how to set up an intake form to get a specific brief in order to design the workshop.
Bonus if you know how to design and set-up early stage usability experiments via landing pages/figma to validate problems/solutions before developing a MVP.

Wow. McKinsey, which has the biggest public sector presence of the MBB, really hasn't been doing too hot at all in the sector.
Its presence is tiny and it's gotten even smaller. Meanwhile it's bungling whatever opportunities it's getting.

If staff aug and not supplemented by the rates of others (as an owner, etc), salary is just a question of hourly rate, wrap rate, and margin. I’ve seen professional staff rates as low as $40/hr (admin assistants) and as high as the mid-$500s/hr (sr PMs, deep experts) for 2000 hr/year positions. The vast majority are $85-180/hr, perhaps $100-225 if highly cleared. There are truly crazy rates for experts and people who work in little bursts, but that’s not what you’re asking. Places like USAID also depress rates by attempting to cap salaries/profit.
If you take a really good rate like $200/hr and assume the lowest decent wrap (adequate benefits), you could conceivable make ~$250k, but are probably going to see more like $165-185k base with a variable bonus, as your company is going to extract more profit and you’re going to want raises even though your rate doesn’t change materially for years sometimes.
Interesting question, but the answer is more nuanced because it is solely dependent on who the person was/skill set. I heard of $1500/hr but for only a 15 hour prototyping session, and I know one gentleman who used to get around $500/hr (1920 hours) but when I knew him he was phasing out but was still north of $250/hr full time. Mind you, these were black programs, the skill sets and the previous positions of those people I won’t mention, but we’re incredibly high level, nor are these programs audited, while different ballgame.
Expert level biller (as classified by client requirements) with 20yr experience w/ TS/SCI full scope at a three letter agency in an extremely niche tech adjacent field - and currently on one of the highest hourly rate contracts in the space. You have no idea WTF you are taking about.

In years past $250k/year + housing/food/multiple flights was standard going rate in Afghanistan. That would typically go to a retired Colonel. More basic grunt types would also make that in active war zones doing security (think Blackwater). I know $400-500k was also possible in AFG with the right resume, e.g. special forces + leadership background. In DC, most folks seem to top out at around $180k for staff aug jobs though a little more is possible with overtime at a smaller outfit. Any more and you need to be out there winning business for your company and leading several engagements with many hundreds working under you.
Depends on what you mean by staff aug. My buddy who has his own one man LLC and works on very black very niche tech stuff is around $200/hr
This is much, much more in line with what I see daily. But consider that what the guy actually brings home is much less because of taxes, health insurance, retirement, no true vacation benefits as an independent contractor.
Note: non DoD IC.
I've seen 250k a year for data scientists in the IC.
Which firms?
Funny EY, I ran one of those programs, your clueless.. and yeah, now I’m at a three letter agency, and career 13-15s ask me everyday how things were done on programs they have no access nor knowledge of, because programs of record which include sap are auditable and are run completely differently. Believe me, don’t believe me, either way your ignorance doesn’t change anything.
Agree with OP. I’d add highly profitable medical specialties, small/mid size business owners with hustle and luck, finding the right sole source contract and holding on to it for dear life, lobbying… I more meant that DC wealth is a high bar in dollar terms. I feel like you could have a HHI over a half mill with kids and still not feel, as they say, comfortable.
Like I said, you have never been exposed to it, but I do not blame you, you are with the 99% of DOD/IC. Have a nice weekend.
I knew a guy getting 550.00 a hour for a COBOL role at a defense client.
This is likely because everyone with a security clearance that knows COBOL is probably dead or in a nursing home.
This is literally my dad, down to the COBOL programming. He is 78yrs old. He can name his price.
