My position is inbetween a tech spec/patent agent and paralegal in the IP world, and I began my career post-grad school at a boutique IP firm (~200 attorneys) and now work at an Amlaw50, so the main difference in my experience is the training we got at the boutique firm. There was very thorough initial training and then bi-weekly and monthly trainings for the younger tech specs/agents/attorneys. I haven’t seen anything like that at my current firm, it’s more learn as you go from the shareholders, but that also means you have more independence. I was glad to begin at the boutique firm and then move to the larger firm once I had more knowledge. Obviously, others may have different opinions!
It depends on the practice. I’m in a niche area and my group recently left a big global firm to form a boutique. We can better serve our clients because we don’t have to worry about all the other corporate firm requirements and our billing rates can be lower. Also since our whole practice is specialized every attorney working on the matter has knowledge of that practice area instead of pulling random associates who need hours to work on our matters. The clients appreciate it and even before we left some clients were telling us that we should leave and form a boutique. Because we already had great clients we didn’t have to start from scratch and many have been with the partners for years, so for us there hasn’t been a difference in size or quality of clients, but I’ve heard that’s a consideration when looking between large and boutique firms.
As far as personal development, we are able to prioritize things that will help our specific practice. We are encouraged to participate in industry groups and conventions that we know are important but a big firm doesn’t understand the necessity.
