Firs year associate at AmLaw20 firm here. Something at work has been bothering me, and I wanna get a head check to make sure I’m not making a big deal of nothing. So I am officially staffed on several cases. But lately I have been getting highly broken down, menial tasks related to a case that I am not staffed on. Even though that case has another first year associate on it. (cont’d in comments).

My supervising partner keeps encouraging me to take vacation time. Everyone else in my group has taken several vacations recently.
However, my hours hit rock bottom for several months at the beginning of Covid. It is impossible for me to reach my annual target this year. I have the ability to bill 50+ hours over my monthly target now.
I feel like higher up management may disagree with my boss’s outlook, but I am burning out. Thoughts?

Why are firms still so obsessed with geography? I applied to this firm’s Boston office because I loved the firm, culture, and practice, and half of my interview was about Boston. Sigh. I’m very much agnostic about my location, so it’s frustrating to have to have a reason other than hey Im very happy and willing to move for this job

Still relatively new at my firm. At my prior biglaw firm, everything had to go through partner review. The partners here say they trust me and tell me to send stuff out without their review (they’re also swamped). Based on all the comments on here about even first years taking on a lot of work, I guess this is normal. But anyone else have a lot of anxiety that they missed something?

Rising 4th year here. I’m happy at my current firm, but I hear another firm is planning to try and poach me. Are firms seriously giving cold offers right now? Given the lateral market and that I’m happy where I’m at and have nothing to lose, I’m thinking I’ll ask for a ridiculous signing bonus and just see what happens. Is $100k too big an ask in this market for a rising 4th year? I’ve seen talk of $300k+ signing bonuses being thrown around (likely for more senior associates obviously).

I’m a lawyer based in Europe. I’m lateraling to a firm in a new jurisdiction on Monday and negotiated a decent pay increase a few months ago (new jurisdiction has significantly higher income taxes so negotiated based on a comparable net pay). My old firm has just announced it is increasing salaries by around 15% which will almost negate what I negotiated at new firm. New firm doesn’t review salaries till September. What are my options here so that I’m not out of pocket?

I’m an IP associate (focused mainly on trademarks) in an AMLaw 200 firm (slightly below NY market pay) and I’m curious to know what IP groups (mainly trademark related practices) at V50 firms are like. My practice is relatively chill. No major fires to put out - steady and predictable 8-9 billable hours a day. I can generally not work on weekends. Am I at a unicorn shop or is this normal for Trademark practices?
