Present to your CDs or the clients? If it’s the former, the norm is it doesn’t matter who presents it because you two are supposed to be a team, not two separate creatives
But presenting to client is an indicator of your soft skills. If you can present your ideas to clients well, CDs would be more inclined to promote you. I kid you not, my ECDs told me exactly that if I wanted to get promoted.
Agree with AD… you’re a team. Just because you had the spark doesn’t mean you need to present it. If you’re writing partner struggles to come up with ideas holistically on their own maybe you need to try some brainstorming techniques together and as you riff maybe nuggets of ideas or ideas can come to life. Just because it came out of one person‘s mouth doesn’t mean the other person doesn’t help shape it.
If you struggle with your partner and feel like they need some coaching on concepting then talk to them or talk to your boss and ask for ways to help versus just wanting to present to prove it was your idea.
But if the problem is you want to present the idea because you are super passionate about it and have a story to tell to bring it to life, talk to your partner and let them know you want to present that one or presented together. It doesn’t need to be so black-and-white with just one person presenting.
Back when I was an ACD, my writing partner would write some of the best set up slides, but the way I read them was much more animated and brought them to life. So she would let me read her writing, I don’t think any of the creative directors thought I was the one that wrote it, they knew it was our idea as a team. She would even speak to the visuals sometimes too.
Did your partner help write the ideas? Or add any build or thoughts? If so, then you both came up with the idea. This isn't a ME, I, MINE business. It takes a whole team to get an idea to clients, get it approved, and then put it into production.
I've gotten in the habit of saying WE in everything I'm a part of because I know how it feels to work with people who only care about themselves and care about them getting all the credit.
Someday you’ll work with a writer who’s more talented than you. It all evens out. Don’t become that “it’s all me” person. It’ll make you a creative department outcast. And karma is real.
