Bain & Company I’m a PhD student looking to start in consulting and am looking to connect with other PhD/ADP consultants that went into consulting to learn more about the experience and how to prep for case interviews coming from a non-business background. Especially looking for advice on McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group, and Bain & Company
Experienced hire. Put interests on resume or no?

We try to do 2-3 weeks. The reality is, if there’s an open position we vet as many candidates as possible. So even if you had an amazing interview, we’re still interviewing others to make sure you were the best fit and that takes awhile if you were first.
And let’s say it is you, then our recruiters need to finalize all internal paperwork in order to make an offer. That takes at least a week. So your scenario could be: 1st one to interview and you’re feeling great; 2 weeks: we’re interviewing others and you’re still the lead but now you’re doubting yourself; 1 week: getting paperwork approved and you feel like crap because we haven’t called you back. And then you get an offer.
Also keep in mind people saying it’s easy for recruiters to be polite and follow-up with candidates - most recruiters are trying to staff about 5-10 open roles which means they have about 50 candidates. That’s a lot to manage so it is in your best interest to follow up. Because some candidates could be sitting in my queue and I’m the one holding it all up.
If they responded to your initial thank you, said they were finishing up the round of interviews, and should have an update within the next week, and it’s been 2 since the interview, do you email again? Or still wait?
I’ve never understood why recruiters don’t treat candidates as clients.
All are potential revenue drivers for your business, so why wouldn’t you treat with the same level of respect—at the very least through precise and clear communication?
Having been ghosted and having dealt with recruiters who don’t operate with a sense of urgency, it’s strikes me as symptomatic of a broader problem with agencies and how they manage their employer brands.
Sadly, I feel that 5 interviews in means the interviewers couldn’t agree that you were the best candidate. If within 5 business days of the last interview you haven’t heard anything, move on.
3 weeks
Usually about 25 minutes
If they havent emailed in 18 months move on. Real friends dont treat you that way.
I’m at 10 months......
Do you think I’ve been ghosted then?
I’ve been ghosted by FCB 3 times. I won’t even consider them now
Two weeks
I always assume I’m ghosted so that any next step is a pleasant surprise !
Ugh after five interviews, that’s awful. Sadly, this isn’t unique to our broken industry.
I applied for a position almost a year ago and just just heard back yesterday that they went another direction. I had honestly forgotten I sent my book in for consideration
Stop it! That’s ridiculous
Two weeks
Did you ever hear back from them?
Have you followed up?
Amazing what people can accomplish just by communicating with others in a communication industry. Haha
Usually, I ask in an interview when they plan to make a decision on the position...will give you a general timeframe to follow up.
When they actually DO follow up, it's almost NEVER within the time frame they promise...
A week or two
Never! (One week)
