When are promotion cycles at your company? We have a spring and fall cycle in my department. Is that pretty standard?

Oh wow potential 2x a year to be promoted? Ours is once a year

We usually have promotions once a year

We have a once a year scenario, there's an evaluation and you get to go on about all the great stuff you've done and the progress you've made. And if they buy it, you get an extra crust of bread tossed in your direction. Seriously, once a year seems okay to me, it's enough time to show that you've progressed or grown in the position or however one chooses to spin it.

Same here

Used to be once a year during year end evaluations. They recently updated it to twice a year, year end and mid year evaluations. My department is small and due to the nature of our work we aren't as productive money wise for the company so we don't get as much money to give people promotions though.

My company does them randomly for the most part but a lot coincide with annual bonus

We have the same, you can submit prior to a mid year review or prior to year end. I’ve always found it strange that it’s BEFORE a performance review cycle not after based on results. Usually April time frame or September

You’re lucky to get promoted here. In our lab your first promotion usually isn’t until 5 years in, I’m getting that promotion 3 years into working at the company. We have yearly standard raises but outside of that there’s not a ton of upward momentum.

I feel like I'm doing everything right, but my research is not getting the attention it deserves.

I've submitted papers to all the right journals, gone to all the right conferences, and published on all the right topics. Yet no one seems to care—no one's citing my work!

What is one of the most frustrating parts of being a scientist or researcher?

I'll tell you what it is: referencing!

You have to do so much of it, and it's so annoying. You have to cite your sources, but there are so many different formats for citations! And then sometimes you don't even know how to cite something, and how are you supposed to know that unless you ask someone who knows? And even then, they might not be sure whether it should be an in-text citation or a footnote…
