It makes sense when you can pay cash for it. If you can’t, then you cannot afford a million dollar vacation home. Buy a 300-400k condo. Be practical…
Who TF needs a million dollar, 2nd home just to have a place to lay their head closer to family. You could get an Airbnb for ten years and not spend $1m.
Ya if it’s just to be near family I’d get a nice condo 🤷♂️
I don’t think it makes sense
Need more context- are you planning on retiring to this location and it's a now or later purchase? How often would you be there? Are you going to use it as an Air BNB and think it would make you $?
All of the above makes sense. If you have the means then surely buy it since it will be your second primary home. Otherwise you could think of buying a slightly smaller house (~$600k) with a yard and then upgrade it when you move permanently. Might save some costs that you can invest in the market in parallel.
Calculate the opportunity cost and determine if it’s worth it to you.
Seems likely after taxes, repairs, etc this cost would be somewhere in the region of $10-$50k every year.
Is that worth the convenience of being with family whenever you choose? Only you can decide.
Money is meant to be spent. It’s simply a choice on what to spend on) or invest so you can spend more later)
Meeting your retirement goals is mandatory. Being closer to the family is optional.
