I always assume recruiters send out a lot of approaches, and my guess is that late responses may get ignored. It's probably like job listings, where employers simply stop looking at applicants once they think they've gotten enough viable responses. Of course, I'm just speculating. The actions of recruiters are generally mystifying.
That’s a fair point. I’ve also wondered if timing matters less once they’ve already found a few strong candidates.

Usually it doesn’t reduce interest unless the role has already closed. Recruiters often reach out to many candidates at once and expect staggered responses. If the role is still open, a late reply is rarely a problem.
Timing mostly matters when hiring timelines are very tight.
What causes a tight timeline usually? Urgent replacements?
I don't think that they are really keeping tabs on everyone they reach out to either. Timing surely has some impact but I don't think it totally ruins any opportunities. Frankly I feel like even when I respond immediately, recruiters often don't respond in return.
True, it can feel unpredictable sometimes. Even quick replies don’t always guarantee a follow up, which makes the process a bit of a mystery.
Yeah, reduced, but not diminished. Try to respond asap, especially in this type of market
