When using the term “total compensation (TC), what does this all include? I feel like it varies. If someone says they’re making TC $280k, but they’re base is $170k, what’s inclusive of the other $110k? Is it a combo of stocks? sign on bonus? Annual bonus?

It includes RSU and annual bonus/profit sharing

It could mean a lot of things. For example, when I speak of TC at my company it includes a monthly phone allowance, monthly vehicle allowance, year end bonus, and project completion bonuses. My base salary is $80k and I’m going to make $150k this year because of the monthly allowances, year bonus and one fat project completion bonus.

My company listed the social security they match to the govt for medicare medicaid fund! Is that correct? From my previous jobs experience in accounting principals that would be considered taxes and overhead?

Yes, that is the true TC, but you don’t see that unless you see the breakout and is not typically used in personal conversations as to how much you make, it’s just companies are paying for more than we see ie taxes and more than we are taking home.

Yes it can include signing bonus, stock options perhaps including pension plan as well.

From a tech standpoint, it includes base, signing bonus, equity (RSUs), and nothing else.

I include anything that ultimately helps my daily bottom line. Paid cell phone. Internet stipend. Bonus. Paid health insurance with paid deductible. Software access.

I regularly use the software programs I have on my work computer for personal projects. Therefore I avoid paying for the licenses and keys on my personal laptop.

A bottle of a litre water at Amazon is Rs 18.

The same bottle in the supermarket is worth about
Rs 20.

The same bottle in a bar costs Rs 50.

At an airport, you may be charged Rs 100 - 150

The bottle and the brand is the same, the only thing that changes is the place.

Each place gives a
different value to the same product.

Have the courage to change places and go to a place where you are given the value you deserve.

Surround yourself with people who really appreciate your worth.

I have an offer to a commercial real estate company in hand. My current brokerage (residential focus) wants me to pay $3000 penalty since I’m breaking the contract and leaving. Is it wise to pay or stick around in residential sales just to avoid that penalty?

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

Next week I’ll be having my yearly review. I’m hoping it comes with a raise. What percentage is a realistic amount? I realized I’m paid just under the average salary for an Account Manager (Landscaping) in Colorado, which is $70K annually. Any advice or suggestions?

Just received my offer from Uber. Is it normal for recruiters to play hard ball when it comes to comp? I feel like what I was offered for the role was low, and he made it seem like it was non negotiable. (They don’t decide this, do they?) I’m afraid if I counter they will go for someone else but I’m just not happy with it overall.

Initial offer: Account Exec, base 45k. No sign on bonus.

Hello all. Looking for thoughts and opinions. I’ve been a sales manager with a small company (I refuse to say it is a start up anymore since they bring in several million in ARR). I’ve been with them for a year and a half. I started at 50k and now make 63k. I am a full-cycle sales manager…the company does not believe in the use of BDRs. There’s no opportunity for growth. Is my salary fair (per MA standards)? I was promised high OTE… but with no marketing team I also hardly get leads.

So I was one of two final candidates for a position. I was not selected and was fine. What I do find issue was being told they loved me and still want to work with me. They referred me to one of their vendors - pay is 50k less and I would be working for the person I lost original position to. I am under the impression they do not realize how insulting they came off. AITA for saying below my salary expectations and not in line w/ career trajectory goals? Thanks but no thanks
