Lol. You must know like one I banker

@op, ey was implying you must know one because your description of their lifestyle is very inaccurate. I turned down banking because a mentor is the #2 guy at a top tier mid market bank. He said they purposely create an environment where leaving before 11pm is looked down upon. Everyone I know has zero life. Basically work til 11 at least Monday-Saturday then some hours on Sunday. They make far more but literally work twice as much. If you work at Deloitte you're a sucker tho because you don't get paid nor have a life. I'm amazed by the people that work at Deloitte, not hating on you, but why wouldn't you just go into banking?

lol bankers don't have time to travel and party at the analyst level

I did. Don't regret it in general, but do regret the fact that I've less exit opps into PE, VC or BD comparatively.

My ex just made the leap. A bit jealous knowing the compensation but they truly have no life balance. I do take some solace in the fact that my sustainable work allows for family and community service (and almost as good money)

It's a really cool job muddied by really shitty people

K1 is right. There are a few groups in I banks that might be more forgiving, but face time is so illogically necessary there.

Moved from IB to consulting. Took a 3x pay cut. And it sucks every damn day. All about the end goal (at least that's what i tell myself)

like

Banking has some of the shittiest people though. Consulting is made up of saints compared to banking, I wanted to punch someone every 15 seconds. Lots of cash and no class.

like

I was interviewing and just stopped because I hated the vibe so much

like

True, you must be happy. I don't get too hung up on it though since my career would require a complete restart given what I do now isn't suited for a lateral

Many gain so much weight - friend used to be the same physique as me (lean, 6 pack). Now his beer belly is the same size as my dad's who's 30 years older than him. But he is making a lot now - triple me...

I turned it down banking. My life doesn't revolve around money. Depends on what you value. I prefer having a life, enjoying what im doing, and have enough money to be comfortable. Didn't really care for what I would be doing as a banker, or maybe I would've chose differently.

like

the grass is brown everywhere man

like

@McK how on earth did you manage that? Did you go from BB IB to MF PE to associate? Even that is not a 3x pay cut!

like

I moved, not even comparable. I hated my job, and was surrounded by miserable people. Did get paid pretty well but had no time to spend that money. Since moving to consulting 18 months ago I have been able to take my holidays, and have only worked IB hours maybe 8 weeks total. Also find the work a lot more meaningful and interesting. Would never go back.

like

@MC2 which firm do you currently work at? What was your typical work schedule in banking, what were you making all in and what are you making now?

like

@ey1 I know a couple. Used to know a bunch but yeah like you snarkly implied they left after 1-2 years bc they hated the stress and hours.

@d1 when they go out on the weekend or vacation they def do it very lavishly.

As it’s been getting colder I’ve been dabbling in soups. This is a brie and mushroom soup paired with balsamic onion & mushroom toast. It was super tasty and really hit the spot. It can also be used in place of cream of mushroom from a can in recipes if you’re looking for a different taste.

Think about this for a minute... why would you sell a book? Because you didn't want it anymore or it was beyond its useful life, kinda like an old car... it's old, rusty and needs more maintainence than it provides useful transportation, it's in the repair shop more often... everytime it goes in you find something else wrong with it? Plus, the prices the buyers are willing to pay are outrageous, by the time you get it paid off it's in the junk yard. No easy solution to building a sustainable business except hard, persistent work. I’m currently in Deloitte’s cyber risk practice but my background and passion is in accounting and finance, and business operations. Graduated in 2017 so still early career.

So I’m in industry from big 4, and a colleague with same yoe comes from MBB. High paying tech firm. I think I work harder and produce quality content at speed, but they can hold executive conversations that tend to impress senior stakeholders.

Big 4 produces work horses and MBB produces leaders. Also they could be a work horse too since I don’t have full visibility.

Anyone have similar experiences or do I just suck at executive stakeholder management?
