Because they are back office?
I'm always disappointed asking question on here. It's like everyone is looking to pick a fight rather than ever have productive conversation. Let's ignore the technicalities you can pick at. I'm just commenting that I'm surprised these companies would be looking for you to take a pay cut when they'd be saving millions of dollars over your career hiring you as an internal consultant, rather than continue to use external consultants at their steep rates.
Consultants are temporary and aren’t paid benefits by their clients
I'm talking about internal consulting practices. Companies are hiring consultants full-time, rather than bring in external consultants. UBS being an example.
Generally speaking, the consultants hired that command those sorts of rates bring unique and more rare skill sets than are found in internal pool.
The companies can also justify the higher pay bc having 1 external consultant can sometimes be as productive as 2-3 internal employees. I say this from having been on both sides. Not always the case but often the talent level for internal does not begin to compare for quality.
FYI I work at a F100 company that has an internal consulting practice for my practice area as an external consultant myself. While in theory you could say they’ll hire ex-consultants for these roles, normally they end up being staffed by long-time (5+ years) internal employees to avoid paying higher salaries and to avoid changing up the culture too much (not great- driven by comfort and complacency). Setting up these internal consulting practices is a cost-cutting measure in itself.
