Why are toxic workplaces so obsessed with visibility? I swear I spend more time formatting updates and crafting the perfect look at me Slack messages than actually doing the work. I didn’t get into this career to perform. I just want to do good work and be trusted to do it. But here, if you’re not constantly broadcasting your every move, you get labeled disengaged. Is it just me, or has visibility become more important than actual results?

Advice for Of Counsel roles? I am of counsel at a firm where I can set my own rate and keep a percentage of collections, which varies slightly depending on whether the client is one I generated or not. I’m finding that a lot of my work is for firm clients where the lawyer negotiated a flat fee (and the hours worked are less, due to efficiency etc). Am I understanding utilization rate correctly? It’s chargeable time over total time? Charged 40 hours and had 10 hours non-charge so my utilization is 80%? If so, wouldn’t it benefit me to understate non-charge hours so my utilization is higher since they only really care about chargeable time anyways? Charge 40 hours still but only put 5 hours non-charge for utilization to be 89% instead of 80%? Or am I misunderstanding how utilization works?
