It sounds silly when i say it out loud now, 15 years later, but Criminal Justice was the only marketable major at my university that didn't require two years of a foreign language. That said, I really am glad my fear of conjugating Spanish or French verbs led me to a satisfying and rewarding career serving my community.
Like so many others I followed in my father's footsteps. I do intend to break that chain with my children. There are lots of ways to serve ones community but in the modern age policing just isn't worth it. Poverty level wages, ever decreasing healthcare, workers compensation administration's that thrive on denying claims, shrinking retirements, chains of command that see their own officers as the enemy, etc. Need I go on?
It's sad because once upon a time this really was an honorable position where you could serve your community and raise a family. Not anymore. Now we have officers giving up living rooms so that their fellow officers don't end up homeless.
