Why do law firms frown on associates taking vacation? If an associate is known to be responsive and to meet their hours, I don’t understand why it is taboo to take a week off for vacation. Every other profession understands people need a reset.

I took a full week off at Christmas and got screamed at. It was the only vacation I ever took at that firm. I left about a month later. Not cool to have this mindset, but can confirm that firms have it.

Wow, glad you got out

The place I’m at encourages me to take my vacation (4 weeks accrued each year). If even a week is taboo where you are, that’s really unfortunate. Don’t know if you could work to be the change, or if you’d have to change jobs to be able to really take some time off, but you’re right that people need a reset

Yeah wtf I’m taking my time off.

Not frowned upon at my firm.

I have no idea either. Associate value to the firm is very simple arithmetic. Why does it matter if I take 3 days or 3 months of vacation as long as I hit 2000 hours and contribute my requisite amount to the firm’s profitability?

I got yelled at when I was at the hospital sick. In firms , there is a large variability in how the partners treat you. If you know this is what you have to deal with you look for an exit. Or not work for that partner if that is an option.

I’d like input!

I am currently a charge nurse and am in a “Pathway to Leadership Program” that will come with promotions into leadership/administration. I am concerned that going through the leadership ladder will lead to a lot of politics.

I am thinking of getting a masters of healthcare informatics, and would love input from people in both industries and any advice you have!

Would you continue into the nursing leadership ladder or go into health informatics (which also has leadership!)?

Hey fishes, can someone tell me how the 80c bracket works, i know i can get exempt upto 1.5lakh under it, what i wanna know is does PF comes under it or not? For example if my yearly pf deduction is 20k and VPF is 10k so now will i still be able to show investment of 1.5lakh under 80c apart from PF and VPF or i'll be able to get exemption on only 1.2 lakh( 1.5lakh-30k= 1.2lakh)?

Thank you in advance!!

Currently at a super conservative defense firm. I do really well but keep getting the criticism that I tend to just do things on my own initiative. I’m just predisposed to being decisive and rather autonomous. Besides being a solo atty, where would this skillset be better suited? Plaintiffs work?

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.

I am an associate at an AM200 firm and was (IMO) very clear prior to accepting this role that I value work-life balance and wanted to try to keep work at night on the weekends to a minimal, but since February, it seems like it’s always something that requires my time as needed disregarding “business hours” or my personal schedule. Thoughts on whether to bring this up or continue to be a team player until I burn out and pay off my student loans?

I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.
