WHY DO PEOPLE SAY “BLACKLINE” INSTEAD OF “REDLINE” WHEN THE LINES ARE LITERALLY RED

Lol thank you!!

Thank you. Be the change. ;_;

I will say technically the lines are red, blue and green (at least if you’re doing it properly in workshare compare, the one true software) but still “redline” makes 200x more sense than “blackline”.

A8, I also do any handmarkups in purple for this reason! Excellent life choices. (Or am I the transactional associate you adopted this from 🤔)

One of my partners calls it whatever color the edits show up.... greenline, blueline, purpleline. That is probably the most technically accurate, but it drives me nuts. Redline or bust! (I should also add he has corrected me when saying “redline” to be like “no, it’s purpleline” at which point, I give up 😂😂😂)

😭😭 these are the things that make me beyond annoyed when a partner’s favorite word is “efficiency.” H O W

likefunny

It dates back to before email when markups were done by hand and then B&W photocopied for distribution to supervisors. The lines were all black. Only one old partner says that here.

(It’s because it’s what the judge on his matter and the rest of his team use but it’s still like nails on a chalkboard every time)

Lol. Half of my partners call if blackline, the other half call it redline. I’ve learned what to call it for each partner.

like

They’ve asked me to do it. I don’t question it.

likefunny

Aren’t they interchangeable (serious question)? I’m feel like some attorneys like to say the opposite of what I say just because.

“BLACKLINE” (lol @ autocorrect automatically putting that in all caps) sounds pretentious to me

Canadian lawyers only say blackline. Redline is a US thing

Think it’s because blackline sounds more polite. Redline sounds like you corrected something and the doc is bleeding. Blackline sounds more neutral. At least that’s the theory one partner told me and I liked it. Hate the term redline

like

You can really tell people’s age by who calls it a black line… but I agree with someone else. I call it whatever the partner calls it.

We generally say “run a comparison” in our office 🤷🏼‍♂️

Either a comparison or blackline. People tend to know what you’re talking about and I really don’t think they give it that much thought.

I wanted to start a thread. What vitamins / supplements / medications are you taking for your menopause symptoms? I’m supposed to take Estradiol pills twice per day but sometimes am horrible at remembering. I should be taking D3 per my Doctor but when I ran out earlier in the year I never bought more. The same goes for my multivitamin although I’m sure I really need one! I wonder if I should just use natural remedies like Black Cohosh, but that didn't work well for me.

Additional Posts in Big Law

Transitioning out of big law without a plan…. any thoughts? I am a first year and I’ve decided to leave BL at the end of this year. I am trying to stay on top of various opportunities and I have an open offer at a non-profit. However, this is all very nebulous. Assuming nothing comes into focus by the end of the year, has anyone been in my shoes (i.e. ditching big law early without a clear trajectory)? What did you do?

I suck at this job. I make mistakes all the time and partners get on me about them. It’s not because I try to make mistakes but they just happen, far more frequently than I’d like. I’m a third year so I have no clue how I lasted this long to be honest. My anxiety levels are on a 10 because I’m so used to being an overachiever but my suckiness is standing out big time.

I need thoughts and opinions on leaving a firm I just started at 3 months ago. It hasn’t been the worst experience but also hasn’t been the best. I was made to believe I would be practicing a lot in labor and employment (which is what I wanted to be doing) and I’m actually mostly doing general commercial litigation. I want to be doing L&E but I’m afraid of what it will look like to my current employer (and the people who have been kind to me there) to jump ship so soon. Thoughts?
