You have mastered the language of how a business works and what kinds of analysis is useful to corporate offices in the industry, and as an EM/PL you have demonstrated the ability to lead a team of others to get the job done while also bearing the responsibility of it all. But you’re also not so deep into it that all you are good for is strategy and high-level thoughts without the ability to execute, which is what the perception is at AP level. Moreover, if you leave at AP, it starts to look like you couldn’t make partner
Industry doesn't care that you couldn't make partner. Unlike earlier promo, the skills you need to go from Senior AP to partner are largely irrelevant outside of consulting, plus obviously making partner depends is contingent on good timing and luck.
There's demand for ex-partners in industry because spending a few years at partner level teaches you things and brings you a network, not because you've been through some kind of filter
FWIW the messaging internally for us from our career services team is that leaving as a first year Principal is the best time. It’s not because of perceptions that you couldn’t make it as Partner or anything, but just that you’re better off spending that additional time in industry vs. in consulting. Plus you start to price yourself out of some roles, so it’s slimmer pickings
This. PL2/Pr1 is widely regarded as the best time to leave if MDP isn’t the long term goal.
I don’t think it’s factually true btw. More like an urban myth. Exiting as a Partner is amazing from what I’ve heard. So don’t this is true. (Coming from an EM)
