Why do we debit from our own bank account when money goes out but credit when we receive money and then when we record the journal entry it’s flopped where if money comes in we debit the account and credit the receivables account? Sometimes debits and credits confuse people

Think of it from the Banks perspective. Your deposit account represents a liability to them. They call it a debit when you withdraw because it reduces their liability and when you deposit it increases it. This the reversal of debit/credit.

Okay from that perspective that makes sense, thanks for clarification!

Thank you all lol idk why couldn’t get my head wrapped around it

It's how banks accounts for the cash. They credit a liability when they receive cash and debit when they pay.

I remember getting confused at that when I first started working as an accountant at a bank but then I realized that a customer’s checking account is a liability to the bank.

Hey beautiful people,
I’m 27Y and work in tech. Unfortunately my carpal tunnel is getting worst slowly. I’m worry that I still have like 45 years more to be retired and can’t stop working because I have a f* mortgage to pay 😭 I have a super ergonomic workstation, but I know my hand needs a long rest, and I can’t do it… Does anyone relate? What do you recommend?

I’m not bad with money but definitely lots of room to improve overall, due to several personal factors I don’t want to list in full here (numerous unanticipated medical bills, bad boyfriends, etc.) Hence why I only have $3k in savings right now. My first mini goal is to have $5k saved by the end of December. I need motivation and words of encouragement. If I pay off my medical bills, I won’t make my goal. I have to start putting saving money first. Getting depressed about my situation.

If I finish my MBA with extra loan money, should I pay it back to reduce the principal? Or invest it into the market? From my perspective it seems like it makes more sense to invest since the market is likely to generate more than my current loan rate. Although having debt also provokes some anxiety.

For additional info: my loan is a private loan of ~100k at ~5.2%. I have no other debt.

What’s going on FB friends,

I am contemplating a move to industry working at a VC, Tax Director role east coast. Looks like it will be primarily overseeing compliance with some aspect of advising on structures etc. There is another tax reporting head above me.

The potential comp is the low 200k with a 10% bonus (still higher than what I am making). I feel this is pretty low for VC standards but maybe my standards are also too high. I have generally seen 25% bonus with carry.

Any thoughts?
