@SVP1 - short-ish story is, places like accenture, deloitte, and mckinsey have lots more money and resources than ad agencies, and are more integrated into the business overall of a brand. they usually advise on what to do with marketing, leaving the execution to agencies, but have only in the past few years bought up some ad shops to start executing upon that advice, in order to take that $$$ as well.
the reason they're able to do it is because they are comfortable in the digital and data space, able to take the work that traditional ad agency creatives hate to do: digital, social, crm, etc. however, that's a massive (and growing) part of agencies' revenue. it pays the bills, keeping the lights on for most places. the shiny chiats, droga5, deutsch, etc of the world are holding on, but revenue is dropping (ex: look at chiat’s size 8 years ago vs today...about 30% or less of what it was).
brian whipple, the head of accenture, notes here that they're not aiming for the super bowl spots, but just the other stuff. thing is, creatives like making tv spots, so most don't care. however, there are only so many tv spots to go around, and the demand and budget for those are shrinking.

Ask everyone you know?
@CD: Ha. I didn't want to be the one to say it but... I could give a shit about awards. I just want to show up, be nice, so good work, get a paycheck and go home happy.
It’s implied, not said directly, but IBM (and Accenture, Deloitte, etc) also own the relationships in the C-suite. So it doesn’t matter how good your creative is, the client execs aren’t going to give up their weekly tee time for you
Nothing interesting I would assume
That’s what they want you to believe .
TYVM, CD. that's what I thought. It's the unflashy shit that doesn't win awards... But wins business.
@SVP1 - which is why nobody is paying attention. creatives love awards, so we ignore the business side of it.
ibm was the fastest growing marketing agency in 2016 or 2017, can’t remember.
they’re becoming a consulting agency, which as we know, are eating our lunch.
How are consulting agencies eating our lunch? I ask because I've asked this many times and no one seems to know why.
