Why is it that law firms only hire clerks with 3+ years experience? They could be missing out on great people that need that first job....

Law firms want someone who doesn’t need much training. In my experience, even trained legal assistants can miss the mark by a lot. It’s a risk to take someone inexperienced that most firms can’t justify.

You can have years of experience and if a law firm is not willing to train their processes and procedures you can still fail. This is how many firm corporations work; they don't care about your success only theirs. Then they eventually wonder why they have huge turnover.

Interested in joining the Reserves, but I’m guessing that’s way too much with a consulting career? No ROTC or previous military experience so I’d have to go through OCS/OTS as well.
Or is it better to wait until I exit to industry and pursue my interest in the military then?
Any and all advice appreciated.

Hi new here. Idk what my value is and if I’m getting paid an amount that reflects my hard work. I am a paralegal for a small law firm (family and immigration) w only 1 attorney. I have about 20 files or more in my rotation at a time. I work on various types of cases at once. Some are simple, others are extensive. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm.
