Why is learning how race has impacted, and continues to impact, America scary to a lot of people?

Because by realizing that people of other races and cultures are just like European Americans--wanting the same opportunity.

Because it is truly daunting and frightening to have to change your mindset and beliefs when they are deep rooted and everyone you have trusted led you this far. I also think people fear the unknown or what they don’t know. By learning how race has and is currently oppressing/silencing/murdering/erasing people living in USA and anywhere…white people with power, privilege, & positionality will not be able to use excuses of never knowing and will have to decide (1) will I stay on the right side of history and share my power/privilege/positionality — meaning I have to give some of it up so that others who look nothing like me can also win OR (2) will I not do what’s stated in number 1 & I’ll continue perpetuating racism, castism (Caste / Isabel Wilkerson), and hate.

&ArkansasHS1, yes! And our students who are white have been and continue to be harmed as well by our current, inaccurate,, exclusionary versions of historical events.

It might require action and change, both of which feel demanding and uncomfortable to many people.

Anybody with a priority date of mid-late 2015 that is considering switching jobs? I have an offer that I was about to sign, but saw that priority dates for filing in EB2 are already at sep 2014 this April. That makes me wonder if i could either miss my window or worse if the date becomes current while my new employer is still doing PERM. 🥰 Good morning, here’s a Thought for Today: What can we do in our teaching practice to ensure that the term Antiracist does NOT become synonymous with anti white? 🤔

Recently, as you probably know, Dr. Seuss's estate chose to stop printing a few of his older books that had offensive racial stereotypes. There was huge backlash from white people, including teachers here, screaming "cancel culture!"
Now we have a white guy who murdered eight Asians in custody, unharmed; while the police officer who killed an African American man for allegedly trying to pass a bad check is about to go on trial.
Full disclosure: I'm white. But I'm still enraged by all this. You?

I’m struggling with an issue with a student right now. I teach in a suburban school outside of NYC that has a very large majority of white students. One of my Black students was recently involved in a biased incident with another student in which he received racist social media messages and racist spoken words from the other student. This was a kid that my Black student thought was his friend. He’s heartbroken, and so am I. I want to know how I can best support my student.

What if we taught students (and ourselves) to humbly subordinate to an objective truth about the world?

What if we spent more time studying and conforming to that truth than reflecting on our feelings about it?

I believe we'd see a lot less anxiety and depression. Questions like "Who am I," "Why am I here," and "Where am I going" wouldn't be so crippling and terrifying. We could look beyond ourselves and marvel at the beauty of a universe greater than ourselves.
