Depends ...if someone is fulfilling 8-9 hours for IT and managing Zomato food delivery on the side , i don't see the problem here
totally disagree on this, we are bound to work for 9hrs a day after that i owe my time to me only and i can utilise that time to make some extra money, thats how i have 4 income source. while doing this we should not share and leak any details realted to current organization we should maintain strict privacy. then its good to go.
But how do you and the company ensure that you are not leaking info to competition on a daily basis ?
I think there should be some list of companies with which we can't work simultaneously. And for rest of the others We can do.
If Ethics clause is being used for a higher moral ground then...
Some Sr. leaders / CXOs are at board of directors of multiple companies. Are they saying they will only be part of one board ... Or else they should be let go. Because technically this is moonlighting too.

Yes, they pay. And that is half knowledge of yours. Director post is NOT necessarily form of employment. You are NOT employed by the company you are director of unless you are paid. Just because it comes as declaration in tax filing does not imply it is form of employment. You can earn through multiple sources and have to add those in tax filing. Also, not all director earn, so not all director can be called Employee.
So technically, it will not come under Moonlighting. Kindly understand the nuance properly. I guess you need to learn more 🤪
TLDR : an employee can be a director, but director need NOT be an employee. Only director recieving remuneration can be considered employee, but director may not recieve remuneration.
However, you may not be allowed to be board member of 2 competing companies. That could be conflict of interest.
Yes. I think it should be made ethical if not. It's one's choice on how much he needs to work.
One may be for passion and another regular one for getting paid to live the life.

Ethical is very subjective here. Some may feel company is not paying enough and that makes moonlighting ethical. Also, I feel employees should be allowed to use their time outside work whatever way they want to as long they do not harm the company and their work (e.g. Working for competitor).
But, companies are free to frame their terms and policies, so rather be careful.
P.S. I am not personally in favor of moonlighting. I'd rather enjoy and work on skill up than work another job. But to each his own
I have seen corporate leaders prepare mvp while working and leave once funding is secured. What is that sort of behaviour called?
I think it should be ethical, until there is no conflict of interest. Also should be done after work hours and using personal laptops.
As long as there is no 'conflict of interest', employer has nothing to go for legally.
I would say it is not ethical. Should read the company clause before joining the company.
Pro
Its only un ethical if i am leaking some information outside the organisation or working with a competitor or during working hours I do something else.
After 9 hours I am free to do anything, and if you don't think you are you need to think about your life.
What if I make YouTube videos in my free time and earn from it? Is it moonlighting?
What if i have a family business and i help out after working hours?
Is it moonlighting?
What if on weekends I teach someon about programming?
Is it moonlighting?
Stop promoting this slave mentality everywhere.
Working apart from your regular/primary job is ok but working for a competitor is an ethical issue and also a violation of employment agreement.
If people want to work for multiple companies at same in same field and that to being the competitor companies then one can choose to form a company and start doing outsourced work or simply do free lancing.
They were all working competitors. That's the problem.
Bro your maid didn't sign an offer letter with terms and condition. But generally in many offer letters it is mentioned you can't work for competitor companies while working or some even mentions after leaving organization for 6 months
I feel moonlighting and side hustle are two different things. So yea I feel it is unethical. For example, I knew a guy who was taking training in 2 organizations simultaneously after graduation during pandemic (while getting paid from both in form of stipend) and left one after the training was completed...
I feel the company invested time and money on that guy but he misused the freedom.
