I’ve been diagnosed with moderate depression and on prescription now. The only thing that keeps me from committing suicide is that 1) I keep telling myself this is just a job and I can find a better one 2) I have responsibilities toward my family.
@EY1 you always come first. Remember that. No job or career or coworker or boss should ever have such an impact on you as to worsen your mental health. This goes for everyone, you should surround yourself with people and an environment you feel really fosters who you are and supports you. Not to say you won't have challenges, but they should never be challenges that push you down a road to where your physical or mental health is at risk. Ever. Some people thrive in the high stress environment PA offers. Others do not. I'm one of those others and, while I do not have depression and anxiety, I have noticed lately I've been a generally negative person who complains a lot. I hate that about myself and I wasn't that way before my job started to suck this year. So I'm making a change and interviewing. If this job doesn't work for you, then you should find one that does.
I attempted suicide. As did another coworker. So it's not that no one tries, it's that we aren't successful.
I'm very sorry. Did you make any other life changes?
Plus I would agree that would drive rates up and therefore be more prevalent
and by "bring about" I more mean make them known/noticeable, rather than cause
I should have left last year but I was wondering if being a senior would make any difference. It surely made a difference: my depression and anxiety got even worse.
im glad ur getting out!!!
A guy I used to work with tried to kill a Deloitte partner in Texas. It happens.
That's really interesting. I feel like this is something not discussed enough.
Good call AA1. It is frustrating when people do not take control of their lives and make a change. I am glad you are self aware enough to recognize all of that AND take action.
PwC OP, not everyone is able to "take control of their lives" as easily as you just made it seem. The fact that someone is unable to take action is a prime symptom of serious depression that would lead to suicide. So, yeah, going to have to call you a jerk now too.
Next time I see someone on the road to suicide, I'll be sure to remind them that if they only took control of their lives, shit would be all hunky dory.
Yea if they did something about it would certainly change the situation.
No, but your comment was ignorant enough to make that slip into the undertone.
Disagree. You can interpret it however you want that's not on me.
Pretty sure what you say is a reflection of you. You asking if I made any life changes after my suicide attempt and now this makes it pretty clear you're not too familiar with this topic.
Why do people stress so much about their job? Is it fear of getting fired? Getting fired is not the end of the world, ergo job stress should never rise to an extremely high level. No one should let a company rule their life. Those suffering depression should focus outwardly by helping others. Takes the focus off self,
So trying to ask questions and learn comes across as insensitive? I feel like that's part of the problem. If topics cant be discuss and questions asked about a sensitive topic we will learn nothing and get nowhere. If I have passed judgement at any point or done anything beyond try to understand so I can learn then I apologize. I'm not here to fix your problems or tell you how good or bad things are or aren't. I'm here to shed light on a subject that is likely more prevalent than I realize and learn from it.
Dude or dudette, look at how you phrased your question. Delivery is important. There is a difference between posing the question the way you did and perhaps saying "In light of the many complaints I see posted here, as well as some recent high profile celebrity suicides, I'm surprised that I do not hear more about suicides of those in our field." The way people come across by the words they choose to use is the problem. What you put out is what you get back. You posed your question in a negative way so you got negative reactions and not just mine.
You are referencing the opening statement which like any good title is meant to grab attention and start the conversation, which it did. I was referencing my follow up questions which like I said have not passed judgement on anyone. To be honest I don't think an initial post like you suggested would have lead to any of the responses that have occurred.
And I am not complaining about anything that anyone has said. I may not agree with the references you draw or how you read into things but unlike you or EY3 I don't think you are any worse of a person because of it.
