Work in an AM200 law firm. Mid level associate and have been thinking about more WLB. I have little kids and want to be more present and not needing to log back in at night or work weekends. I do enjoy the work and the people and the firm is for the most part very family friendly, but I feel a bit burned out. Would in-house actually be a good move?

The idea of in-house providing WLB is mostly fictional these days unfortunately.

Hard disagree.

Paradoxically, not having an hours requirement means you’re just supposed to do everything without regard for how long it takes. It’s also easier to drop more work on you when there are layoffs or people quit. In a group or at a firm that cares about WLB, you can usually at least say “I’m 100% utilized, I don’t have capacity for X.” With no objective measurement of how much you’re working (or a common understanding of what’s reasonable), it’s much easier to end up miserable if there’s a lot that needs to be done and not enough people to do it in a 9-5 workday.

Can you start your own practice in the same practice area?

Hello, I have 10 yrs experience in the residential mortgage side including loan officer, underwriter, real estate ect. I am looking to move into the commercial underwriting space. I found a few schools with certifications. Can anyone recommend a certificate that holds weight when trying to break into cre underwriting? Anything I can do to stand out with minimal commercial experience? Most companies want 5 yrs experience and I am finding it hard to find opportunities. Thanks

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)
