Travel. I have an SO at home and when I had my 90+ minute commute everyday I was up and out before she was up and back after she was in bed (sometimes crossed paths for an hour at max). With travel it can be easier to set boundaries with teams and clients as well. I would rather go hard mon-thur and be away rather than not be present mon-fri with the pressures of trying to come home early knowing that you typically can't.
I am happy on local projects for two years now. Family time is priceless and can't take over priority with points/miles. Understand that the "miserable" level is similar, but you sleep on your own bed, drive your own car, and see your family everyday. If I was single I would go with travel projects, but again it's not in your hands. I know a few millenials who want to travel, but never get a travel project.
Travel every week - hands down
🛫🏨🍺🏨🍺🏨🍺🏨🍺🛬=👍
I did your 2nd scenario for a year and had a similar quality of life as I do now with my traveling projects. Might as well take the per diem and points if you're going to be miserable.
Travel!
@M1 when or if i ever have a wife or kids, no way in hell will I do this job
Travel
None of these posters must have kids. When you make a decent salary, you'll choose time with your kids/wife.
I'm gonna guess Chicago for you OP?
Did this earlier this year. Sucked the life out of me and I was miserable. Travel all the way!
I've done both over the last year, and hands down travel is better. You get to bill travel time, get tons of points, and it allows you to separate work from your personal life. I was so miserable the first couple months of commuting 90+ minutes to this fucking client site that I was always in a bad mood, always fighting with my fiancé. Whereas before it would suck for a few days being away, but you were in a better mood, and we got a sweet week vacation to Aruba for free. It's not even close, travel all the way.
Travel. Fuck suburbia
Travel! Hate being on a local project
I think the typical understanding is it's hard to be on client site from 8 to 7 to 8ish (which most of us do when we travel) and expect much time with the family while adding 90 minutes each way every day.
Dd1 yeah there was one time I billed 22.5 hours in a day. Early morning audit, straight to the airport in podunk town USA cross country flight w/a connection. I don't know what the norm is, that's what my manager told me to bill, anytime from my house to the hotel, including delays. With the caveat that I complete as much work as I can while traveling. It wasn't a bad gig.
Ask for hotel 2 nights a week...
I did the latter and 100% travel
I've been traveling for few years now - just hate the early flights and being away now but the per diem and points are so good. 1st world problems at its finest 🙈
Travel!!! I've been commuting for 2 years when before I was traveling Monday to Friday. The commute distance is just under what is allowable to get a hotel for a week. Traveling Monday through Friday was way better.
