Definitely always use an associate referral if you have one. And you can almost certainly get the same guaranteed bonus with an internal referral.
This isn't true at all, unless the firm itself is cheap and generally nickels and dimes its employees across the board. At true Big Law firms, search firm fees come out of the recruiting budget, not the hiring group's budget.
If you're in an active practice and have the right level of experience, you should be able to get multiple offers and can leverage those to get signing bonuses, guaranteed year-end bonuses, and similar, and you can't do that applying to one firm through a connection. When using a recruiter, the recruiter makes the ask and negotiates for you, whereas you'd do that yourself if you apply through a connection.
