90% we are in Sp500 index, remaining in crypto. Whenever crypto balloons beyond, we trim and put it in index. In between Tesla, Apple & Microsoft stock gains helped as well. At the moment, no holding in any individual stocks.

A2: as close to 5mil and one of the homes paid for. Then the income from that can pay the remaining mortgage on second home.

Congrats

After each kid, started 529 plan in first month. We contribute $400 to each of their accounts every month. 600K equity b/w primary & rental home, rest all brokerage & 401k.

like

Congrats. With house or without house? You got kids?

Thats amazing. What do you think were the biggest contributors to you alls success

Keep some money aside for investment and keep at it whatever direction market goes. Track on qtrly/half yearly basis- adjust as needed but keep going long term.

like

Yes 2 kids in elementary school. HHI 450K pre-tax in MCOL. Strategy from get go: max out 401k, HSA & DC FSA, emergency fund in HYSA, added term plans for both 8x of gross incomes. After the expenses, whatever is left, invest in brokerage sp500 index.

Thanks MD1: hopefully with a promotion to either of us, we can have more disposable income that goes to backdoor Roth. At the moment, we have no more room to contribute.

🥳

I wish I wasn’t adaptable. Humans aspire for a greater level of comfort and once achieved, adopt that as their new baseline. Because of this, somebody making $100k cannot simply comfortably revert back to a $50k lifestyle. The slow growth of personal wealth isn’t noticed as ideated. Instead, we are never satisfied.

Home reno financing question. Have a big project coming up in the $120-150k range. Funding sources are:
- 90k from a heloc around prime
- 10k from a credit card that offers promo checks at 2-3% for 12-18 months
- 375k in a brokerage
- 5-6k per month cash that I can put towards the project, loans, or brokerage

I don't want to stop funding the brokerage because my FIRE plan is less numbers based than "hoard like dragon until it's enough" but maybe I should... How would you optimize?

Is there a definitive guide to cost of living? The obvious cost of living centers (SF, NYC, LA etc.) get covered a lot, but I’m wondering where my city falls. It’s a modest Midwest city with ~100k residents but is a relatively touristy spot. It often feels like a MCOL area but I’m not sure how to adequately judge that, and it would be helpful to know when comparing salaries and the like.
