Yo! NYC is not a good time right now both professionally and for fun. Wait and see what happens with the market closer to graduation.
But if the market was not garbage, my opinion would be spend 1-2 years in Europe and get entry level out of the way, get into Junior or Mid level. Both for pay and for responsibility purposes. NYC is more fun when you have financial wiggle room and a lot of entry level is <$50k which means shitty apartments/roommates/location. I moved to NYC at 24 and that was great.
Thank you so much!
Do you really get that much more responsibility as a junior in Europe? I know creatives in Paris who had to spend a few years as Assistant Art Directors or Writers to a more senior creative team.
Some US agencies give great briefs to juniors. In my agency (large multinational), the ECDs make everyone on all levels compete. Especially on the cool, opportunity briefs. It’s not fun for me but it happens a lot.
If you have this itch, I would travel to NY as soon as you are able (virus permitting). You might keep traveling your whole life, so why wait to start? Don’t let people dampen your enthusiasm.
Awesome! Thanks for answering:) Europe is huge and it depends on the market, but where i’ve interned i’ve gotten crazy opportunities to pitch and a lot of responsibility very quickly. I’ve got the impression that might take a long time in a big NYC agency.
Do you go to Miami Ad School in Germany? If it weren’t for the pandemic, I’d recommend doing an internship or two in New York so you can experience it for yourself and, most importantly, meet valuable contacts. Know that it’s extremely difficult to get sponsored for an O-1 straight out of school. Student awards help a lot, but won’t guarantee a visa.
Cool:) I go to Berghs in Sweden, won a few awards this season and think i’ll try getting an internship next spring. Any tips??:P Thank you!
God forbid juniors don’t want to do grunt work. As CD and ECD, I’ve seen too many entitled people who think to they shouldn’t have to do grunt work. Even as you progress, this kind of work still exists. And, believe it or not, you can learn from it. But I get it. As a junior creative, I was anxious to jettison the crappy work and move on. Sometimes, you just have to embrace the suck. Good luck in your search.
Happy to help. And I get why you want to be on the fast track. Or at least not get lost in the corporate gears. Best of luck to you. (BTW, such a waste of time designing a birthday card for an ECD.)
Students and Interns can usually apply for a J1 Visa to work temporarily in the US.
I’m working in NY (15+ years in Europe) and tell all the juniors to move to Europe. Get some experience! A junior here will make a few social posts. So stay there make work and get hired on a (a)cd level. So at least you can afford you own place and actually make enough money to enjoy the city.
Do you have a US passport? Are you planning to study in the US?
@VMLY&R Appreciate what you’re saying. But do you know what the weather is going to be like this time next year?
Everyone here has advised OP to wait and see what happens with travel and the virus.
But those factors aside, Interns are a lot cheaper than the Creative Directors that are being laid off. Internships will continue for that very reason.
The J1 requires you to pay your own way. Agencies have lawyers to help with the paperwork but other than that it’s not a big commitment for them.
There’s nothing wrong with OP exploring this option. It’s perfectly feasible.
How many years as a US citizen in advertising do you need before getting a job in Europe?
None or a few. If you attend an ad school abroad-entry is easier.
I agree with everyone above. If you can get some USA experience, go right ahead. Also, employment in NY is “at will”.. so people often hop around with ease to get faster promotions, better team fit, or a raise, so that mobility can be a significant advantage if you end up unhappy where you’re at. Visas make this trickier for non citizens, but advertising loves Europeans and Brazilians.
I’m in NYC and have always wanted to work in Northern Europe!
Hey! Cool! Hit me up if i can help or anything:)
Right now, my friends who came here from other countries can't leave because they may not get back in. Others who are waiting on green card and citizenship have had their appointments indefinitely pushed back, and there are so many people out of work and coming out of school, on an economy where many employees are having to cut salaries (I have heard up to 25%, some have gotten either their partial paycheck back or full but it's still tough), that I find it unlikely american companies will want, or can, pay the visa fees for you. Too many people to choose from here, and too little money going around. That with the immigration offices overrun or closed, you won't be able to get paperwork anyway - they will handle current issues first that have been backed up since March. You're best chance to move us to get a job in Europe and be patient. NY will be waiting but the crisis that is happening here is all encompassing from jobs to immigration.
