6th year corporate associate at a regional firm and debating between the following options: 1) Staying at my current firm and making partner in about two years. I know I will make partner if I stay. 1800 Billables. I like the idea of being about to bring in clients and see my compensation rise by my own efforts though I realize it's stressful. 2) Switching to a larger firm to increase my compensation for a couple of years. 3) Going in house because I hate the stress of billables. Any thoughts ?

Impossible for anyone to answer this for you. It’s all about your priorities. I will say that options for 3 may be greater if you do 2 first.

I'm confused about (1). Are you bringing in clients now? Are you not allowed to? You seem to think that once you make partners, clients will come to you leading to higher compensation, but that's only a fair assumption of clients are clamoring to work with you know and you can't get credit for them, for some reason.

Anyway, this question is really about what your own preference, so I doubt anyone here can give you a great answer without more information.

#2 was probably badly worded given the space limitations of the post. I've brought in a couple of clients. I realize that clients aren't going to be clamoring on the door and my comp isn't going to jump just because I'm a partner. And at the end of the day, I'll have to work my way up the partner ladder to getting bigger clients. However, it's nice to know that my efforts can lead to developing business versus going in house where I would not be able to build my business. Trying to figure out whether I'm more suited to partner or in house life.

I’m in almost the exact same boat. I’ve personally eliminated number 2 - if I’m going to grind, I’d rather it be on BD and trying to build my book as opposed to more billables.

I think I’m going to try to ride out number 1 for a bit, see how it goes, and pivot to number 3 if it’s not something I enjoy / I can’t pull business of my own.

Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! I am currently in an IT internship position (making pretty solid money considering) and following this summer I will stay on part time during my senior year (discussing a full-time job offer after already). How do I advocate myself for that to my manager without sounding unappreciative of the position I’m in?

I'm in a litigation, about 9 months in. Is it normal that I spend majority of my time making bundles for my partners (printing, binding, moving docs in a different order whenever there are new documents or he wants to add stuff) reviewing documents and making tables (e.g. dates, which documents are from where), and the only legal work is like notices of admission, list of documents, the occasional research? I'm so bored and I want to quit but I don't know if I have unrealistic expectations.

Any tips for building a client base from scratch? I’m a 4th year associate at a firm of 12 attorneys. I practice in business, compliance, and real estate (primarily on partners’ files) and don’t litigate. Most of the partners’ clients are wealthy friends or friends of friends (not my circle). Associates are not referred business, even cold calls, and so far “networking” events like Chamber of Commerce luncheons have been a bust. I equate a book to autonomy and career choice and pressure is on.
