A company I interviewed with wants references before giving salary details, and I’m hesitant because I do not want to involve current contacts if the number ends up not making sense. The role sounds interesting, but it feels early to pull other people in without basic clarity first. Would you push for compensation details before giving references?

Don’t give references without an offer

like

I don’t see the harm in asking the salary range for the position. Not offering a range seems behind the times. You also don’t want to waste your references’ time talking about you when you wouldn’t even want the position if it pays too low

like

Yes, I would push for compensation range before any serious discussion

Additional Posts in Ask A Recruiter - Law

Hi, been stuck in the contract analysis/review cycle. I have asked a few recruiters how to make a lateral move into in-house. They told me to focus on contract management, which I have been doing for the past year. Now that I have, are there any sites besides “jobscan” that I can use to make sure my resume fits the job descriptions? Does anybody know any recruiters that could help me, as well?

Any tips for countering the $130k offer for more using the other potential offer while not risking a complete withdrawal of the current offer? I’ve never been in a position to bargain my starting salary so this is all very new to me.

I interviewed at a law firm and had my final round last Friday. The Tuesday afterward, I got a call from the recruiter saying the firm won’t have a decision for another week. I believe they’re interviewing other candidates. Does that make me second or third choice? And does the fact that I’m working with a recruiter hurt my chances of being selected due to the commission? Should I hold out for the offer or is 1+ week a sign that I won’t be selected?
