A lot of big law folks here but was wondering, as a Plaintiff’s PI associate, what is your pay? Salary, eat what you bring in, eat on all cases (personal and firm client files), combo, something else?

I’m a first year Plaintiff’s PI associate at a small firm (5-10 attorneys) in the Boston area. $75k salary plus bonus (tbd this month) and full benefits (all health ins. premiums etc). No formal eat what you kill, but bringing in business is encouraged and desired. I’m sure it would translate into the bonus somehow.

Third year in Chicago, $53,500 salary plus about 4K in health insurance and lots of PTO, you get 1/3rd of what the firm gets on the cases you bring in yourself which helps

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. It’s definitely going to be a pay cut coming from big law but I do get some nice equity in the company. Is the jump worth it? I’m so burnt out by big law and this seems like an awesome opportunity to help shape a newish company. Any tips on how to figure out if this is the right move for me?

What is the process for negotiating a job offer (from a firm or otherwise)? Do you have to be ready to ask for more salary/bonus/other perks right when they call you to make the offer, or can you ask for time to consider and then call back with your additional requests? I’m not the best at thinking quickly on the spot, so feel like I could be more thoughtful if I took a day or two to consider my requests.
