A new guy joined our team last week and I'm having trouble working with him already. Trying not to be biased because he replaced a woman I really loved to work with, but already communication is more complicated, I'm repeating directions or statements multiple times, and he's several times just straight up ignored my point in a group conversation until someone else has brought it up. What can I do to make this easier?

Give it more time. Could be that he's nervous or still settling in. It's only been a week, so I would wait at least one more before making your final decision.

Do you think it could just be because he is new? Sometimes I feel like if you give it time it all shakes out.

It's just been a week. Just give him a little more time to adjust and get to know all of you in the team. Everyone had been in the same situation and we all know that adjustment period may take a month or even months. He may be a cool guy once you get to know him well.

Empathy is vital and having a healthy working relationship with your new colleague is beneficial for everyone. I would say try to get to know him, maybe go for coffee/lunch, try to understand his experience so far, his expectations. You’ll be in a better position to assess the reason of his behaviours. Maybe not something you want to hear but - check the way you speak to him, check your tone, make sure your directions/statement are clear, make sure you’re giving him enough context when speaking. If you support him during his onboarding to the team/company, it should be a great first step :) ultimately if his behaviour is not professional you should address it as a professional, but make sure you’re not biased and you’re not enabling this behaviour

Maybe he's having a difficult time adjusting and filling in the role of someone who have probably been in that job for months if not years. Try asking him what you can do to help or if he needs help. We were all once in that guy's position. Be kind.

I understand how you feel that you've been left behind by someone you loved to work with and you may be feeling prejudice against him because of it. Just allow him some time and room to adjust and get the hang of things. It's still too early to say if he's actually slacking.

Hi all. I’m a new hire as an associate tech consultant, been here for ~2 weeks.

This week, I’ll be meeting my senior manager (who is also my counsellor) in a 1:1 virtual session. Any tips on specific questions I should ask? I’m meeting him for the first time and thought I might want to learn a lot from him!

Thanks :D

I'm a cashier. We just got a new manager, and she's making things really hard for us. She starts work at 4:30am and leaves around 2:30pm, but she still expects us to stay until 6pm and work on the weekends! She gives us really long shifts and doesn't give us much time for breaks. And when we ask her about it, she gets mad.

I'm worried that if I speak up, she'll make my life even harder. I don't want to lose my job because of this—do you guys have any advice?

My boss in my creative agency threatened to fire me because I, a male, came into work with my nails painted. HR is having a very complicated day today as I found out I could take legal action if he does fire me since we don't have an established dress code that has any guidelines against male nail polish wearing.

Need advice - I've been talking to a Partner contact at a big-4 firm where I REALLY want to work. She sent my info to the managing partner in my city, but I haven't heard anything for about 3 weeks. Been playing it cool because I know these things can take time, BUT, I just got let go from my current firm. I have til 12/15 to find a new job.

Do I tell her my timeline is now a month, or is telling them I'm getting fired going to tank my chances of getting the job?

I’m new to the firm. My third project my manager was very hands off. He’s wants to have a discussion with me about my performance. He did not give me any support to work with; even when I asked! And my direct manager agrees with him, but it was my third week. What to do? I feel like I’m going to say something crazy. Any advice?

Am I particularly uptight, or is writing meant to be done alone, without a partner talking to you? With past partners, we chat through script notes and then I go off to execute. Current partner likes to sit and chat as I write. To me, writing is crafting a conversation. So I can’t talk to you and simultaneously talk to this audience. Of course I can just say “I’m gonna go write.” But since we’re both CD level, I’m like…is this his first rodeo? Maybe other writers are different though.

I attended a Kindergarten Readiness meeting and a preschool director who has been open for most of the pandemic said that her staff wears smocks or aprons to protect themselves. We are going back full time in less than a month. I am not sure if I should buy an apron. Does anyone know any research about this?
