A partner at a competing firm reached out to me directly and offered me a job on the spot, bypassing their HR department entirely. It’s a great opportunity, but nothing is in writing yet, and he told me not to submit a formal application online just yet. I don’t want to quit my current job without an official offer letter, but I also don’t want to insult him by being overly bureaucratic. What would you do here?

Don’t give notice until conflicts clear. You can accept in the meantime, subject to getting the final offer.

Please make no moves until you receive an offer in writing. This is business.

Yes

Agree wait until you have accepted an offer in writing and have a start date. But the partner reaching out instead of HR is irrelevant. Partner is more important on this issue.

Agree with others, don’t move until you see it on paper. If he is really serious, he’s going to make it work.

Wait until you have a firm job offer, before you do anything. Just because he reached out to you with a job offer, does not mean that its a firm job offer,.

For the first time in my life, I know what I’m supposed to do at my job, with relationships around me and it’s all because the enormous sense of anxiety I used to experience evaporated during quarantine. Hi, been stuck in the contract analysis/review cycle. I have asked a few recruiters how to make a lateral move into in-house. They told me to focus on contract management, which I have been doing for the past year. Curious if anyone else is or has been in the same boat. I started as an assistant at an entertainment law firm prior to passing the bar. Upon passing, the partner told me they would hire an assistant for me since I now became an associate. That was 1.5 years ago and I am still in the limbo of juggling my own workload + doing assistant roles for my supervisors. I have also had no increase in pay, which is a huge deal for me. Is this normal in the entertainment world? Any suggestions?

I interviewed at a law firm and had my final round last Friday. The Tuesday afterward, I got a call from the recruiter saying the firm won’t have a decision for another week. I believe they’re interviewing other candidates. Does that make me second or third choice? And does the fact that I’m working with a recruiter hurt my chances of being selected due to the commission? Should I hold out for the offer or is 1+ week a sign that I won’t be selected?
