A partner scheduled a “quick 15-minute check-in” today that somehow lasted an hour and a half. It happens every time. My whole afternoon derails because their definition of quick is whatever suits them in the moment. I feel guilty setting boundaries with someone who controls my workload, but I’m drowning in calendar creep. How do you enforce time limits without looking ungrateful or inflexible?

If it happens every time, plan for it. Start blocking off your calendar, but “move things around” as needed. Also use that time to give them status updates, get their buy-in on solutions to problems etc.

Similar situation. I will chat, but then ask a work question I’ve been needing an answer. Chat for shorter spaces with questions. Usually after 4th, it’s over

If they always last an hour and a half why not just schedule an hour and a half for the meeting? If there's no formal meeting invite you can still block off that time on your calendar.

You signed up for a career where you don't get to enforce time limits on your boss, lol. You either learn to adapt or they'll find someone who can

You would look ungrateful and someone that should be fired at the first possible opportunity.

The partner likely things they are giving you could training and partner contact. If you really want to get out, schedule meetings so you have a hard stop and actually have to get out.

*thinks *good. not sure what happened there.

“I’ve got call at X time but happy to chat until then, or I could circle up with you after if we need more than 15 mins.”

Pretty sure you work for them. Pretty sure they get to take as much of your time as they need. Pretty sure that’s what the paycheck is for.

How far in advance did the partner schedule the check-in? If it was scheduled a week or two in advance, there might be very little you could do or say as that sometimes boils down to how organized you are with your calendar.

If, however, they scheduled it the same day or a day before and you have important client meetings, attorney case conferences with the OC, or court appearances that day, I would tell the partner up front that I have these meetings prescheduled, which cannot be changed.

Maybe I’m the odd one out here, but I’ve run into this issue with supervisors and senior counsel. I had no problems telling them that I either could not talk with that day or that my time is limited because of the client.

The client’s matter most times take priority and there’s been understanding of that because of the professional responsibility I have to them. I generally think long term - my license. I have no problems explaining my rationale to partners. Talking with the state bar committee?…different story altogether.

Nice bowl to avoid lowering the average in the US-centric threads. Anybody else finding that with the lack of pay rises this year, it’s become even harder to benchmark?
