Hi fishes,
I am planning a switch so was going through some salary data for a software engineer. My ex-senior manager recommended me a website: Growceed.com which helped me a lot in getting clarification about a lot of things but I am in doubt whether the average salaries of software engineer mentioned on Growceed.com really that much in top MNC companies.

Regardless of how the money works out, congratulations. Seriously. In today’s ad business, if you have been laid off in Florida for a year, and you were able to snag a job you really like in the Big Apple, you have done something amazing. A good NYC agency is seeing killer resumes & books every day. You didn’t give up, despite the fact that it was discouraging at times, I’m sure.
Awwww thank you. That made me feel really warm and fuzzy.
Negotiate. Explain the cost of living factor. I got an offer in a past life that was 70% higher when I did. They started with the same salary I was making in a cheaper city.
That’s the route I took today. Wish me luck. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
Take it. Go. Finding a place to live will be really hard, and life a bit more brutal. And you will have state and city income tax if you live in the city. But the investment in Your future will be invaluable. You can also view this as a stepping stone to another great city or leaverage if you decide to go back to Florida to freelance. So see it as investment in your career.
Negotiate. Hard. If your are an ACD level they should at the least pay relocation costs. But push up the salary too with your tax point. They will never say nevermind. They will just say no we can't meet you there. Don't be scared to lose it, be confident in your worth!
Get your foot in the door, and then figure out how to move up.
If they won’t budge on relocation or cost of living, try getting a review after 4 to 6 months - with the expectation of a raise if you do well. In all honesty, asking for an extra 5 to 10k for cost of living isn’t unreasonable by any stretch of the imagination. You sure you want to work at a places that undervalues/under pays it staff?
Thank you. Yeah I’m really honored to be offered this considering all the freaking great talent in NYC. *blushing* 😊
Always ask in a nice and respectful way. All they can do is say no.
Best of luck to you!
Go and stay for a few months. Once you e proven your worth, negotiate or find something else.
Continued... FL has no state tax, NY does. I live in a 3,000 sqft fixer upper here and will be in a studio most likely there. This offer is definitely not adjusted for cost of living at all. BUT it’s the coolest job ever and I know it will open even more doors.
What do I do?
Update: asked for a bit more and temp housing or a sign on bonus. They’re now saying they’re on a temp hiring freeze. I’m really bummed but also know I couldn’t take the huge loss with the offer as it was. Such a cool job though and really want it. :(
