Unfortunately the luxe brand, higher paying clients are used to agencies doing work on spec with RFPs (which I think is a criminal practice and I do not understand how an entire industry has operated this way for decades but whatever). I wish I had advice for you, I want to work with smaller clients that are in wellness/mental health, arts, music, and food, that have decent budgets but, I’ve not been able to get very consistent work with those type of clients, as fun as they may seem.
My bread and butter has always come from freelancing (permalancing) at a pharmaceutical ad agency. And as a freelancer you (generally) have the freedom to have an alternate schedule, for example I have an agreement that I work Monday-Thursday with this agency (I still work 40 hours a week most weeks anyway). In my experience pharma paid much more than consumer advertising agencies, but the work is not as fun. Although the work hasn’t been very fun for years because clients don’t want to spend money anymore—they just want it “done yesterday” and don’t care if it’s good—at this point they want AI to do everything so I’m not sure how many years that we creatives have left in this industry.
Your best bet are the people you know in the entertainment industry—keep attending events (not just networking ones but premiers, screenings, comedy shows, concerts, anything where you’re in person with people in entertainment) and you may get work via word of mouth.
