How long have you been there? Has it been long enough to show you are capable of filling the role?
Put together your list of things you've done to fill that space and present your case to your supervisor. If they aren't ready to give it to you then ask for an action plan. Then set up a follow up plan with them to track your progress. You need to be actively working toward advancement and engaged in your roadmap. Don't just bide your time and hope someone notices. If you've been told this is an opportunity, actively seize it.
Also want to add that i am being recognized for helping as much as i can to “fill that role” while it is vacant. Afraid to get stuck pulling up slack without title/compensation.
Let it be known that you are interested in moving up to that role. Sometimes people are so caught up in their day to day that they can't see what is staring them in the face. Agree with previous poster that if they say you're not ready, ask to put together a progression plan so you and your boss know when you might be ready and work towards that goal, identifying milestones and accomplishments along the way.
