After 6 years working as a UI/UX Designer and Front-end Developer, I’ve recently been impacted by a layoff.

It’s been a moment of reflection, the market feels very different now, and expectations have evolved significantly.

I’m currently evaluating my next steps while continuing to build, learn, and stay active.

For those who’ve gone through something similar, did you take time to reset, or jump straight back into job searching?

You need to upskill. Depending on your savings and financial cushion, you should definitely look for the next position that aligns with your growth goals. In this job market, I wouldn’t take a job for granted. If you can find one quickly that allows you to upskill simultaneously, that would be ideal. Then, make your move within that company or look for another position that utilizes your new skills.

I was let go at the end of January. I immediately started the job search, finished up an app I was building, and then my wife had an idea to start a business.

Hoping I can get a new job soon and we can build some more diversified income for the future.

I took time to reset. At least three weeks.
My layoff was very abrupt and cruel if I dare to say so, if im honest with you, when i went back to searching i cried my eyes out each time that i had to search for something.
I did take time to learn tho, i used my free time for freelancer projects and upskilliing but i really did enjoy the unemployement time.

I started a full time in-house design job that pays extremely well. I barely have to work at all. This makes me very confused since I kept hearing stories of people working 60+ hr weeks as designers at ad agencies. I am not complaining, but I have this creeping irrational feeling that I’ll get fired for not working even though there’s nothing for me to do. Should i be making up projects or asking for more work? Or just chill out? I just feel very confused. Are a lot of full time jobs like this?

I am seeking new employment, I was recently laid off due to lack of work. I would very much appreciate any leads. I have a Bs in Construction Management and over 15 years experience with Revit and AutoCAD and 7 years of plumbing design. I have solid references and impeccable work ethic. I truly enjoy what I do. Working remotely the last three years has become a way of my life and supports our current situation well, therefore I am seeking a similar role but will consider other opportunities.

Advice needed on handing in notice, I recently signed an offer letter and understand the screening process takes 4-6 weeks. I have a month's notice period and have agreed a preliminary start date in Feb.

I was planning on not handing my notice in until the checks had been completed so its all secured (not that I think I will fail any checks), but apparently I need a reference from my current employer not previous ones. Can't really do this without handing in notice can I?

Question! I just moved(transferred) to another team of my company and received new title, graphic & creative services. I was a senior graphic designer at the previous team. What do you think about my new title? I know that title is not a big thing but why I feel like my title is downgraded here… Good thing is my jobs here at my current team are what I really wanted to do. This is amazing. I love my new team and people here! Super healthy working environment! But just curious about the title.

What are actionable items one should strive for when trying to grow as a designer after landing their first role? I hear a lot about ways to grow to land the first job but very little about how to improve after you know the basics.
